Our Visit to the Nelson Cathedral - By Room 9
Today Room 9 went to the Nelson Cathedral. We meet James C's mum, Mel and Mr Grey. They showed us around the cathedral. Mr Grey played the organ for us. He made the organ sound like a flute, a oboe, a trumpet and a trombone. We went in the labrinth maze. James put on his choir robes for us. Then we had a look outside at the bells. We thought the Cathedral was big, old and awesome!

Bishop's School By Rory- Jean
Room 9 went to Bishop's School on the 11th of November. When we first got there we got dressed up. The boys were dressed up in waistcoats and hats. The girls wore dresses. I looked funny. We went because we are learing about New Zealand. We wanted to see what people did in the olden days. Nicky told us to sit down quietly. We put our chairs down quietly with no bangs. We had a little look around. I liked getting dressed up!

The Flag
This morning we got to put up the flag. Mr Munslow's class normally does it but we got to because we are learning about flags at the moment. Mr Mitchell helped us unfold it at the flag pole making sure it didnt touch the ground and hoisted it up. Then we had a discussion about the flag. This afternoon we are going to design our own Hampden Street flag.

Time
This week in Room 9, Mr Mitchell is on full control and he is teaching us about time.
We are learning how to tell time to the hour and half hour. We have done lots of fun activities. We have made our own clocks, used the big clock on the court and drawn around our shadows.
Here are some photos from when we drew around our shadows. We went out at 9.30, 10.30, 11.30 12.30 and 1.30 and draw around our shadows. You can see in our pictures the changes that happened. We think it is kind of like using a sundial.

Ship Diary
We have been learning a lot about what it was like when the first ships came from England to New Zealand. We have been looking at the diary of Jessie Jenkin's who was on board the Lord Auckland on the voyage to NZ in 1841-42.
We have start our own diary, pretending that we are on the ship travelling to NZ.
Here is Zoe's first entry from her diary.
Today is Tuesday and I am about to go on a boat to sail to Nelson in New Zealand, for 5 and 1/2 months. I have no idea what Nelson is going to be like.

Port Nelson Ahoy!
On Tuesday, Room 9 went to the Nelson Museum to the Port Nelson Haven Exhibition about the first ship from England to Nelson. The upstairs in the Museum had been turned into a ship. We got to get dressed up even Miss Dippie, Mr Mitchell (our Student Teacher) and all our parents who came to help. We learnt how to tie reef knot and hoist a sail. We saw where they had to live. Some of the passengers had to share their bed with their whole family! We had lots of fun. We are going to read a diary of one of the passengers in class. Here are some photos of use dressed up at the museum.

How to make a Kazoo
This week in Room 9, we have been making musical instruments.
These are our instructions we wrote on how to make a kazoo.
You will need:
Paint
Pastels
A cardboard tube (not a toilet roll)
Baking Paper
Beads
A hot glue gun
Rubber bands
Instructions
1. Get a cardboard tube and get an adult to cut it. If you make them a different length they will make a different sound.
2. Paint it all one colour.
3. When it is dry, use pastels to draw a pattern.
4. Get an adult to hot glue the beads on.
5. Cut a square of baking paper, big enough to cover the bottom of your tube. Cover the bottom of the tube with the paper.
6. Put a rubber band around the bottom of the tube to hold the paper in place.
7. Your kazoo is finished. Hum away!

Group work using Thinking Hats.
Today for our big book activity, we worked in 5 groups. We had a red thinking hat group (feelings) a white thinking hat group, (information) a black thinking hat group (judgements)yellow thinking hat group (benefits) and green thinking hat group (creativity)
We had to come up with different ideas using our thinking hats and big book.
The Feelings in the Great, Big, Enourmous Sneeze, By Asha
I used my red thinking hat and looked at the feelings in the story the Great, Big, Enourmous Sneeze.
The Elephant at the start of the story felt to hot so he kept on sneezing and sneezing because he had a cold.
The Baboon felt nervous and frustrasted because his ears came inside out, so everything sounded really loud.
The Sloth felt very happy because he didn't have to climb down the tree, because sloths are very lazy.
The Parrot felt curious and mad, because she lost her beautiful feathers, they were so beautiful she felt ashamed.
The Elephant felt quite funny at the end of the story because he couldn't breathe propery because he had a leaf around his trunk.

6 Thinking Hats
This week we are working hard, using our 6 thinking hats. We have been using them when we have been reading our big book, "The Great, Big, Enourmous Sneeze." We used our white hat to look at the information, our yellow hat to look at the benefits and the black hat to make judgements. Today we used our Red Thinking hat. We had to look at the feelings of the animals in the story and why they felt that way.

Our Backdrop Designs
Today when we were in the computer suite, we came up with some designs for the backdrop in our scene for production. Our scene is the "Sea of Exploration." We thought it would look like a city. We have used KidPix to draw some cool building that we think would be in our city. We shared them with our star buddy and talked about what we liked about them.
Mason has a walk through chimney. Natalya was proud that she did it all by herself. Caleb like his house on top of a chimney. Jack likes that his looks like pryamids. Lucy thinks her middle building looks like a hammer. Miss Dippie thought they were all amazing! What do you think?
